This year marked the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion in Normandy that ultimately led to Germany's surrender. Today, about 500,000 American WWII veterans who served in Europe, the Pacific and other places are still living – but one U.S. veteran has been living longer than them all. That’s Lawrence Brooks, who just celebrated his 110th birthday at the National WWII Museum. Michelle Miller reports.

Afghan Vets: As the Taliban retakes control of Afghanistan after the longest war the US has ever waged, veterans are asking what their sacrifices - and those of friends killed and maimed - were worth?

Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscri....ption_center?add_use

'It took the USA four presidents, 20 years, trillions of dollars and thousands of lives to replace the Taliban with the Taliban', says Chayse Roth, a veteran who runs a radio show for others like him. The human, ecological and financial cost of the war has been astronomical. 'I am tired of seeing death' says veteran Juan Dominguez who lost both legs and an arm after jumping on a homemade bomb. For many veterans the fight is not over. Facing homelessness, PTSD and the heavy weight of knowing that the Taliban are back, some veterans, such as Arnold Strong, have found purpose in assisting the evacuations of families trapped there. 'You can take the soldier out of the army, but you can never take the army out of the soldier', he says.

ADDITIONAL VA INFORMATION
The Department of Veterans Affairs has three, separate administrations aimed to serve our country’s Veterans with an assortment of benefits that address the unique needs of every Veteran. To be sure you are interacting with the proper administration within VA, here are short descriptions for each VA administration:

VHA: VA’s Veterans Health Administration is the largest integrated health care network in the United States, with 1,255 health care facilities serving 9 million enrolled Veterans each year.

VBA: Veterans can earn a range of benefits that help them transition back to civilian life in the country they fought to defend. Through the Veterans Benefits Administration, VA helps servicemembers transition out of military service, and assists with education, home loans, life insurance and much more.

NCA: The job of the National Cemetery Administration is to make sure those who served this nation are never forgotten. NCA provides dignified burial services for Veterans and eligible family members by maintaining 142 cemeteries as national shrines and providing lasting tributes that commemorate their service and sacrifice to our nation.

Roger Schultz served as a cannoneer sergeant in the US Marine Corps. He liked serving in the army, because "I learned how to be a Marine and nothing else. You always had somebody on your side."

Eventually he quit the army to be back with his family, but his wife left him the following year and his life spiralled out of control. Schultz ended up living out of his truck, barely getting by.

In search of a place to stay, he finally checked into a Veterans Resource Center (VRC) in California, which provides housing and group therapy for former members of the military.

Scarred by war, many returning soldiers struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Their inability to adjust from combat life to civilian life often leads to substance abuse and addiction, thus, finding support for healing and recovery is a constant challenge.

The VRC and its counselors help returning veterans find jobs and sort out supplemental government income, healthcare needs and their housing situation.

Vice President Harris observed Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery. President Joe Biden traveled to the COP27 climate summit in Egypt.

Nearly 18 million people will be honored at Veterans Day celebrations held Friday across the country and globe for a holiday that ties back to the end of World War I. The date marks when Germany and the Allies signed a 1918 agreement to end war hostilities. Fighting ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. At the time, Nov. 11, 1918 was known as the end of “the war to end all wars,” according to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to celebrate and observe the end of hostilities with parades, public meetings and a “brief suspension of business beginning. To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory," Wilson declared.
