Task Force Pineapple was a volunteer operation of several special operation forces to evacuate more than 1,000 refugees from Afghanistan.
It was formed on Aug. 15, 2021, by Scott Mann, a former Green Beret, to rescue an Afghan commando he had served with and his family. After that, the group grew to more than 50 members and planned its next evacuation, code name "Pineapple Express."
Under cover of darkness, more than 500 people were smuggled through a series of hiding places to get them to Kabul airport undetected by Taliban. To confirm their identity, the fugitives had to show a picture of yellow pineapples on a pink background.
It wasn't until the August 26 attack, in which 196 civilians and 13 American soldiers lost their lives, that the evacuation came to a premature end. Nevertheless, Task Force Pineapple was able to rescue more than 1,000 people who otherwise probably never would have reached the airport.
For the former soldiers, rescuing the Afghans was a particularly important concern, as most NATO countries did virtually nothing to help.
